When we told people we were packing up our suburban life near Baton Rouge, Louisiana and moving to Woodville, Mississippi, we were met with blank stares, puzzled looks and, eventually, the question “Why?'“ This blog documents our adventures and answers to that “Why” each day we spend in our rural community.

School Events

Through the Decades - Wilkinson County Christian Acadamy celebrates 50 years with Homecoming events on Friday.

  • 10:30 am - Homecoming Parade

  • 5:45 pm - Homecoming Court Presentation

  • 7 pm - WCCA Rams vs. Franklin Cougars. All WCCA alumni attending the game will be presented on the field at halftime.


We Are One: Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence - Wilkinson County School District celebrates 60 years by kicking off Homecoming and Spirit Week.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 1 - WCHS, MLK, & WWMS Coronation Ceremony at 6 pm

  • Wednesday, Oct. 2 - WCES & FES Coronation Ceremony at 6 pm

  • Thursday, October 3 - WCHS Homecoming Pep Rally

Noted events will be held at the Wilkinson County High School Gymnasium. More events coming in next week’s edition.


Business Events

The Woodville/Wilkinson County Main Street Association will host Business Before Hours Friday, September 27 from 7-9 am at the Orchard Cafe. All new and existing Woodville/Wilkinson County business and property owners are invited to come out and enjoy light refreshments and discuss ways to better promote local businesses.

“Bricks to Clicks” marketing refresher course with MSU’s Dr. James Barnes will help area business owners take control of their marketing and boost sales. The course runs October 1 from 5:30-7:30 pm (light dinner served) and October 2 from 7-9 am. The cost is $30. Contact the Main Street Association at 601-888-3998 to register.

Visit Main Street Market & Cafe where you can dine and shop all in one historic building.

Don’t forget Saturdays at the Orchard Cafe - 11 am-3 pm. They will also be open late this Friday until 7 pm.

Have you tried Whitetails? Breakfast lunch and dinner served daily - 5 am to 8 pm!

South of the Border never disappoints with upscale cuisine served with a small-town vibe. Serving lunch and dinner Friday and Saturday; lunch on Sunday; and dinner on Wednesday and Thursday.

3J Fitness & Nutrition, the brainchild of owner and Woodville resident Lashauna Simien-Whiting, offers Meal Replacement Shakes (24-27 grams of protein, low calorie, low sugar, low carb) and Loaded Teas (24 calories, 0 sugar, energy, hunger control, mental focus) in a variety of flavors.

Say hello to Ms. Jessie at M&M Hot Tamales where you will find out of this world tamales with “a little bit of Mexican & a whole lot of soul.” ($3 per bundle, and 3 tamales per bundle)

Tucked into a colorful building on Boston Row you’ll find L&M Bakery. Southern cooking at it’s best, and some of the best desserts around!


Recreation

If you’re interested in history but aren’t sure where to start in Woodville, check out this online catalog of historical markers before you visit. There’s plenty to see, and we’ll be posting a suggested tour route soon just in time for the cooler temperatures. In the meantime…

Have you visited the Lessley Mound west of Woodville? Part of the Mississippi Mound Trail, this mound was build during the late Coles Creek or early Plaquemine Period (ca. AD 1100-1350) and is a single large rectangular platform mound. The site also features an old cemetery. While you’re in town, check out the Wilkinson County Museum’s Mound Exhibit, which showcases mount sites throughout Mississippi and Louisiana.


Retail

Have you met B & H Farm Supply’s store mascot, Billy Nelson? Rumor is that he’s just adorable! When you stop by to meet him, check out the furniture markdowns this weekend. Hunters might be interested in their selection of Buck Plus, Nate’s Buck Bait, or Rice Bran (plain and flavored). Don’t forget those crickets and worms for fishing!

“Transformation Tuesday” at The Better Half on Tuesday, October 1. Bring in one pair of jeans you don’t love anymore and get 50% off a new pair you will love! Lots of fun from 9:30 am to 8 pm, and The Better Half will donate your old jeans to The Foster Village for Teens and Adolescents.

Did You Know?

The National Grocers Association (NGA) and Associated Grocers of Baton Rouge (AGBR) honored Wettlin Treppendahl, owner of Treppendahl’s Super Foods, with the NGA Spirit of America Award at AGBR’s annual shareholders meeting. This award was established in 1982 to recognize key industry and community leaders in areas of community service and government relations on behalf of independent retail grocers.

Congratulations to Wettlin, a true ambassador of the Woodville community!


Wilkinson County High School student Catalina Bell was recently recognized by the Wilkinson County School District for displaying academic excellence. She scored 1096 points out of a possible 1099 on the 2019 Mississippi Academic Assessment - English II.

Keep up the incredible work, Catalina! You make Woodville proud!
