Welcome!

When we told people we were packing up our suburban life near Baton Rouge, Louisiana and moving to Woodville, Mississippi, we were met with blank stares, puzzled looks and, eventually, the question “Why?'“ This blog documents our adventures and answers to that “Why” each day we spend in our rural community.

Most folks know about the Natchez Balloon Festival this weekend (always a fun time!), but don’t forget about the neighboring Vidalia River Front Flea Market and Carnival. Both will run all weekend—Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, October 18-20. By the way, Woodville’s own 3J Fitness and Nutrition will be at the Vidalia Flea Market & Carnival. Be sure to support our local business owners—look for the smoothie flag!

The Crosby Schoolhouse

The Crosby Schoolhouse

On your way there, take a quick detour through the tiny town of Crosby for “Open House at the Schoolhouse” Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20 from 10 am - 4 pm each day. Built around 1930, The Crosby Schoolhouse served as the primary and middle school building for the town of Crosby, Mississippi, until around 1970. The high school and cafeteria buildings, now gone, stood where the Crosby Memorial Park is now located adjacent to the two-acre property of the Crosby Schoolhouse.

The Open House will feature handcrafted items by the artists who live and work at the schoolhouse.

The Open House will feature handcrafted items by the artists who live and work at the schoolhouse.

In 2014, three friends and artists from New Orleans—Peter, Kate, and Karen—acquired the 10,000 square foot schoolhouse. The building retains six of the original 8 classrooms, which now serve as bedrooms and studio spaces. The remaining two original classrooms now serve as guest bedrooms, living/dining rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms which are shared between the residents. Renovations on this historic building are ongoing. Peter, Kate, and Karen all work primarily in different fabric art mediums. Other guest artists are frequently welcomed to spend time at the Schoolhouse, from ceramic artists to jewelers to musicians to writers.

The event will feature studio tours, demonstrations, and handcrafted items for sale (cash or card accepted). Make plans to go out and see the beloved schoolhouse in its repurposed state. While you’re there, be sure to ask these artisans “Why Wilkinson County?”

Did You Know?

Woodville has its own celebrity pet! Have you met King Hershel “Hershey” Sanders? You might see him hanging out at Sanders Repair Service with his human or at Woodville Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Anne. But one of his favorite places to hang out is by the fence on Main Street during parades where he might happen upon some festival-goers’ leftover nachos and turkey legs! Dog-lovers, beware—you could become addicted to this guy’s Facebook page!

Why Woodville? Thoughts from a 7-year-old

Recently a friend shared a conversation she had with her daughter:

68811407_511101706320041_5762701334943891456_n.jpg

Camille: “I hope they don’t put anything where Fred’s Dollar Store was.”

Mom: “Why?”

Camille: “Because I don’t want it to become a big city here. Like with skyscrapers like they have in Natchez. I want everything to stay ‘Low’ and be ‘country.’”

Mom: “No worries angel ‘low and country’ will always be Woodville, I promise.”

Well said, Camille. We feel the same way.
